Congratulations to the Ladies!

Tony Tinworth, Thursday, 11 March 2010

Congratulations to the ladies - all the sides won at Pennants today!!

Today saw the second round of the Women's Pennant season and all 4 sides had wins - the 5th side had a bye. This follows last Tuesday's first round when both 2's had wins but the 4's & 5's went down. Unfortunately the point scores are not available to update the website yet- hopefully they will be soon -the newspapers are not reporting point scores.

There will be no repeat of this result next Tuesday because our two Grade 2 sides are playing each other!! Bad luck.

This year there is a new scoring system for the women's Pennants - 3 points for an aggregate win and 1 point for each team win - a total of 5 points for each round. This is a change from previous years when there were points for only the aggregate winner.

PS The website has a policy of only commenting on good Pennant news! Any bad news can go without comment.

Runners-up- Mixed Fours Championship

Winners - Mixed Fours Championship
L-R Bob Balmer, Val Thompson, Ed Bagdassarian & Joy Sapier

Bob Balmer's team wins Mixed Fours

Tony Tinworth, Sunday, 7 March 2010

Bob Balmer's team ( Val Thompson, Joy Sapier & Ed Bagdassarian) today won the final of the Mixed Fours Championship with a convincing win over Shirley Hale's team (Lena Pittman, Kuno von Pralitz & Mike Gallagher) 38 shots to 4.

To make the final, Shirley's team had wins over substantial opponents - the Heath/Woodcock/Donnelleys and the Rose/Caganoff's - but today was not her team's day.

This is not the first time the Sapier/Bagdassarian/Balmer combination has won this event. In both 2005 and 2006 they won the Mixed Fours but on those occasions Bob's wife Bette was part of the team. Sadly she is no longer able to play bowls.

Congratulations to all concerned.

A message from the Men's selectors

David Bottomley, Sunday, 7 March 2010

The Selectors would like to wish all bowlers the best of luck during the forthcoming pennant season.

The selectors have attempted to choose the strongest sides that we can field taking into account ability, keenness and potential for future development. The difference in ability between some of the bowlers selected in the various grades is quite small and for those who believe they should be in a higher grade we would say please let your bowls do the talking and win a flag for the club in the lower grade.

The policy of course will be to keep winning teams together when possible; however, according to the Availability List we have a number of bowlers who will be absent for one or more rounds and will have to be replaced. If the replacement player performs better than the absent one, the latter should not automatically think he will get his place back. To represent the Club at Pennants is an honour to be earned, not a sinecure. There is no ‘i’ in team.

Any team that performs very badly or loses three games in a row will be reviewed to ascertain if changes to the team are necessary. This has to be done early, before the grading round, which is Round 5. Any feedback to the selectors will be welcome.

We believe that the selected sides have the potential to do well and be competitive in their respective grades.

It is important that all bowlers enjoy their game and the pennant season, especially those who are new to pennants.  Good luck.

David Bottomley

Pennants start this week

Tony Tinworth, Sunday, 7 March 2010

This week sees the commencement of the Pennant season for both the women's and men's club.

The first round for the women is on Tuesday with 3 home matches - Gold 2's, 4's & 5's - with the Green 2's playing at Killara. The 3's first round is on Thursday since they only play one match per week and this is at East Roseville.

For the men, there are 3 matches at home - 4's, 5's & 7(2)'s - with the 3's playing at Belrose, 6's at Forestville and the 7(1)'s at Mona Vale.

For the men and women there are a number of members playing Pennants for the first time. We wish them an enjoyable -and winning- experience and season.

For the rest, just have a win!   Results will be on the website.

St Ives retains the George Griffiths Trophy

St Ives retains George Griffiths Trophy

Tony Tinworth, Saturday, 6 March 2010

The club today retained the George Griffiths Trophy by defeating the Newport side by 13 shots - 121 to 108- in the delayed match of this annual event. The match was set down to be played in January but was cancelled because of the heat wave on that day.

The trophy is played for by 3 teams playing at Newport and 3 at home. Our 'away' side carried the day, winning by 26 shots whereas all our 'at home' teams went down.

This event originated in 1971 when the presidents of our two clubs- George Griffiths of Newport and Gil Manuel of St Ives- were playing against each other in a Pennant match. George & Gil had become friends through their respective interests in the industrial and mining sectors of business. They agreed that a goodwill match be played annually between the two clubs with teams visiting both clubs.

George donated the ice bucket trophy which has now been held by St Ives since 2007. Newport last won it in 2006, St Ives in 2005 and Newport held it from 2001.

Playing for the club today were:

At Newport:      Geoff Rose, John Donnelley, Chris Carey & John Cumming
Rob Coles, Cyril Williams, Laurie Wilson & Bob Talbot
Michael Heath, Alwyn Ellem, Tom McKelvey & Tom Giles

At St Ives          Richard Lander, Neil McKenzie, Sid Caganoff & Tony Wright
Sidney Taylor, David Hillerman, Ken Sansom & Alan Dennett
Peter Tonoli, Bob Jesse, David Bottomley & Bernie Cookson

President David Ball reviews Tapner

David Ball, Friday, 5 March 2010

Our 28th.Tapner Tournament is over for another year. We consider it to have been a great success as we registered almost 600 bowlers throughout the week. The feature event took place on Thursday 4 March. This was The Jacobs Creek Wines Shield involving 7 Visiting Clubs plus our Home Team playing over 33 ends. There were nine players in each team and they contested pairs, triples and fours to eventually come up with a winner. North Epping won the final outpointing St.Ives by one shot in a keenly contested contest. Congratulations to North Epping and commiserations to the Local Team.

We were fortunate to have mostly dry conditions for the duration although we were washed out on the Monday afternoon.Several times it threatened rain but our luck held. Mr.George Tapner opened the Tournament on Sunday morning (Feb 28) and a capacity field contested a mixed fours event. This was followed by men's pairs on Monday, men's triples on Tuesday and ladies triples on Wednesday. George Tapner is a brother of the late Harold Tapner who was one of the founders of this wonderful competition.

An event of this nature requires a great deal of planning and organisation and the Tapner Committee are to be congratulated on the success of the tournament. Geoff Rose,Lin Smith & Bowls Secretary Ivan Glover were responsible for the smooth running of the show. There were many others controlling umpiring, parking, cleaning, lunches and morning teas and conducting the raffles. A particular thank you to the ladies for their marvellous effort in providing delicious lunches and running the trading table. A sincere and huge thank you to all concerned. Now we have to get ready for next year!

Winners of the Turnabout Triples

Turnaround Triples - sponsor is winner!

Tony Tinworth, Thursday, 4 March 2010

Talk about looking after our sponsors!

The winning team in today's Turnaround Triples included our sponsors representative Peter Sullivan as well as Harley Rose and our sponsorship guru Tony Lee.

I'm sure they won it fair and square and it was a well deserved win for Harley and Tony as Harley has been helping brother Geoff organise this weeks events and Tony has done a great job in arranging sponsors for our scoreboards and raffle prizes.

Second prize, still with 3 wins was Kel Stein, Bruce Wallace and Bruce Wallace and there were then prizes for the team with the biggest margin in each of the three rounds of play. Even President David won a prize as a member of the team who won round 3.

They were:   Round 1 - Bob Balmer, Greg Stott & Ed Bagdassarian
Round 2 - Max Brodie, Fred Walker & Peter Crumpler
Round 3 - Phillip Sydney-Jones, Jim Milton and President David Ball

Fortunately the rain held off during the day, despite a few showers, and the day bought this year's Tapner Tournament to a successful conclusion.

Wrong bias benefits charities

Tony Tinworth, Saturday, 6 March 2010

Two charities - the Breast Cancer Federation and the Prostrate Cancer Foundation - have benefitted to the tune of $500 each as the proceeds of the Club's bad bias box.

This initiative, for which Bernie Cookson deserves the credit, provides some fun and at the same time our lack of concentration does some good!

Keep up the good work everyone!

Rain upsets Tapner Day 2

Tony Tinworth, Tuesday, 2 March 2010

Rain caused the cancellation of the afternoon match on day 2 of the Tapner Tournament. This was a big disappointment to those playing in this, the most popular event in the tournament.

Fortunately the rain held off until almost the end of play in the morning game. There were 21 clubs represented today with many regular friends of the club. Amongst the winners was Vince Maree, a former greenkeeper.

Today's event was sponsored by Guardian Funerals and Manager Elwyn Walker presented the prizemoney and invited players to inspect(?) the Company's 1927 hearse which was on display.

Today's winners were:

First placegetter:     Bill Parry & Bob Hawtree (Turramurra)  + 28 shots
Second:                  Vince Maree & Ron Palmer (Eastwood) + 25 shots
Third:                      Bryan Popplewell & Francis Buttle (Turramurra)  + 20 shots

George Tapner opens Tapner Tournament

Tapner Carnival officially opened

Tony Tinworth, Sunday, 28 February 2010

The 28th Tapner Tournament was officially opened this morning by George Tapner, brother of the late Harold Tapner in whose memory the tournament is named, in the presence of 120 keen bowlers, 89 visitors and 31 members, many of them 'regulars' and friends of our club.

George, himself a keen bowler at Dural Country Club, referred to the passing of Marie Tapner, Harold's widow, shortly after last years tournament and he gave a typical 'Marie Tapner' welcome - a wave of the hand to all those playing for the first time. He went on to say that credit for starting the tournament goes to 3 St Ives members - Llew Thomas, Tom Deans and Reg Foster and they expected it to be a 'one off' event. 28 years later and it's still going strong.

Harold Tapner was President of the Royal New South Wales Bowling Association from 1977 to 1979. His objective as president was to visit every club in New South Wales and his badge collection on the wall of our board room is evidence of his efforts. Sadly, he died whilst still in office with his task unfinished.

St Ives showed it's usual hospitality by letting all the prizes go to visitors! Today's event was sponsored by Inspired Travel of St Ives and prizemoney was presented by Adele Mitchell.

Results were as follows:

First Placegetters  - Diane McBryde, Elizabeth Blackwell, Ashley Wibley - Turramurra & Hornsby        2 wins + 35
Second placegetters - Lyn Lorry, Ann Humphries, John Tuck & George Humphries - St Johns Park     2 wins + 28
Third Placegetters    - Anne Coleman, Danika Porter, Ken Emura & Steve Coleman - North Sydney     2 wins + 26
